Thanksgiving

It's the week of Thanksgiving. This special holiday in this country is a great opportunity to stop and reflect. For many, it’s a time for gathering the family. Plus, there is the large meal, with turkey and various food dishes and often quite large quantities. There are numerous traditions, whether it is driving long distances, talking late into the night, playing touch football, taking a long walk, raking leaves, or visiting old friends. There’s also the time to catch up on sleep, finish some assignments, and get ready for final exams.

What is most important about Thanksgiving is to really take the opportunity to reflect, and to reflect on both parts of the word "Thanksgiving." With “Thanks”, think about all of our surroundings, about which we can be thankful. Within university life, be thankful for the opportunity to be enrolled in an academic program; the challenges to stretch your mind and skills with your academic coursework; the balancing you do between school, work, home life and social life; the insights you are gathering; the knowledge you are gaining; and all that you are learning about yourself. Consider also the beauty and culture within the state and the neighboring nation’s capital. And for the nation, be thankful that you have the opportunity of freedom, of obtaining an education, and of pursuing your dreams.

For "Giving", reflect upon all that you are providing for others – friendship, guidance, wisdom, insights, time, love, service and other qualities of yours. Plus, not only are you giving now, but you are preparing to give in numerous ways in the days, months and years to come. During this holiday time, take the opportunity to identify how you are giving, to whom you are giving, how you are preparing to give in the future, and what you can do to enhance the spirit of giving that you have within yourself.

Enjoy this Thanksgiving Day and week……a time of giving thanks, being thankful for giving, and so much more.
